Toraja vault door
Wood door with Buffalo Head Motif, Toraja Culture, central Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. This door was originally used at the entrance to a funerary vault carved into the face of a high limestone cliff. The buffalo motif was reserved for wealthy upper class families, and it denotes wealth and abundance. The rider is holding a traditional "kris" knife at his waist. Rare, late 19th century.
